Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Research shows that wool bedding can improve your sleep by up to 25%.
Getting a good night’s sleep can improve your memory, let you live longer, allow you to be more creative, help you to learn better, help you maintain a healthy weight, and lower your stress.
Featured in The Telegraph, researchers at the University of Sydney have found that sleeping on wool gives a 25% better sleep. They put eight healthy volunteers through ‘polysomnography’ tests, testing how each person slept with wool, cotton and synthetic sleepwear and bedding and at different temperatures. The results showed that wool gives a longer and deeper sleep, with the most difference at higher temperatures.
Why wool is so special:
Wool is a good absorbent. The average person perspires ONE LITRE of water each night! Synthetic or down fibres are unable to absorb this. Wool, on the other hand, absorbs up to 30% its own weight in moisture. This keeps our bodies dry and comfortable and keeps us from getting too hot at night. During the day a wool mattress pad and duvet will completely dry out again. This means no breeding ground for allergy-causing moulds, bacteria and mites, yeah!
Sleeping with wool is also more cost effective. Excessive moisture levels in synthetic and down duvets cause them to start to become less effective after about 10 years, whereas wool has a life span of 20 years plus.
Wool is also a sustainable product. As long as there is grass to graze on, it will continue to provide a living for many farmers. Wool is also biodegradable, meaning it will completely decompose when returned to the soil, in a short amount of time.
Wool is easy to care for. The protective waxy coating on wool fibres makes wool products resistant to staining and they also pick up less dust as wool is naturally anti-static.
Wool is naturally safe. It is not known to cause allergies and does not promote the growth of bacteria. It can even reduce floating dust in the atmosphere, as the fibre’s microscopic scales are able to trap and hold dust in the top layers until vacuumed away. Thanks to its high water and nitrogen content, wool is naturally flame-retardant, and has a far higher ignition threshold than many other fibres, will not melt and stick to the skin causing burns, and produces less noxious fumes that cause death in fire situations.
