 5 Kitchen Remodelling Tips

guest post by Eric Mellmer

It’s easy to hold off on your kitchen remodel, especially if you don’t know where to start. But, 2020 might just be your year! There are several beautiful, modern trends you should consider implementing in your own kitchen.

What you remodel depends on your budget and the scale of your remodel. So, we’ve discussed some small changes you can make as well as more costly ones. But, keep in mind that you don’t need to follow all of these tips exactly. Hopefully you find some inspiration here!

Creative Backsplash

Today’s kitchens often feature one or two elements that really make the space pop. One of the more popular elements is a creative backsplash. With a backsplash that contrasts your kitchen cabinets or countertops, you can really make it an attention-grabber!

Tile backsplashes are incredibly popular in 2020 and you have several options: ceramic, stone, and cement, among others. Ceramic is without a doubt the most modern look, so if you’re going for that look, try a ceramic backsplash out!

If not, stone and cement evoke a rustic, old-fashioned look. But these materials are beautiful in modern settings as well. Other popular materials include marble, brick, and slate.

You also have to decide on a color; this year white is one of the most popular choices, often used to blend seamlessly with a white-themed kitchen. But if you really want this piece to stand out, go with a contrasting color or colors, like a multi-colored tile backsplash, which is gaining popularity this year.

Open Kitchen

Space is a luxury in your home and an open kitchen can really make your kitchen feel roomy and comfortable.

Open kitchens are convenient for several reasons:

  • It’s easier to converse with your guests while cooking
  • You can move in and out of the kitchen quickly and efficiently
  • It gives you more space for storage, for additional cabinets or a kitchen island

Not to mention that an open kitchen is sure to catch the attention of your friends and guests. Explore Pinterest for some inspiration!

Flat Panel Cabinets

Modern and minimalist are the two Ms of remodeling in recent months – and flat panel cabinets showcase this style to a T. Flat panel cabinets have no handles; instead, you can open the cabinet using a groove in the side or bottom.

It’s a really simple design but gives kitchen cabinets a sleek look and feel. They are a versatile option for your remodel too; they look great in nearly any kitchen!

Make a Statement with a Concealed Vent Hood

While we’re on the topic of minimalism, a concealed range hood is gaining traction in 2020. Concealed range hoods are range hood inserts that fit inside a custom hood or your custom cabinetry.

You can design your custom hood however you like; then the range hood insert simply slides inside the hood!

Other popular range hood styles include wall mounted range hoods, island range hoods, and under cabinet vent hoods. These hoods are built with exterior stainless steel housing, with built-in fans. You can’t go wrong with a range hood, but lately, people love the sleek look of a range hood insert.

Overhead Lighting

You can never have too much lighting in your kitchen, right? Hanging lighting is very popular, especially pendant lights! This will keep you on task in the kitchen and they’re a great fit in kitchens with high ceilings! You can also consider lighting above your countertops and under the kitchen cabinets.

You have so many options for overhead lighting, and you’re free to customize your kitchen space however you like: the number of lights, type of lights, their hanging height from your ceiling, the fixture material (glass, stainless steel, open, etc.)…the possibilities are endless!

We hope you enjoyed our five tips on remodeling your kitchen for 2020. Good luck with your remodel!

The Right Window Treatments for Your Home Tue, 03 Mar 2020 17:09:00 +0000 The post The Right Window Treatments for Your Home appeared first on NikkiDesigns.

Choosing the Right Window Coverings for Your Home

One of the most exciting parts about moving into a new home or redecorating is incorporating some of your personality into it. It’s an opportunity to create a home that you have always envisioned. The truth is, there’s more to it than just picking out the decor. Think about the basics and what is needed, one of those necessities are definitely window treatments. Windows are the eyes of your homes’ soul, they enable you to play with light, ambiance and allow for the comfortable view to the outside.

Here are a few key points you should bear in mind and that will ensure you to purchase the best window treatments for your needs:

  • What sizes are your windows?
  • How much light do you want to let in?
  • Different treatment for a different room
  • The privacy you wish to have

Window Size Matters

Window treatments can enhance a room while also being an important factor for lighting and privacy. The size of your window will affect what looks best and what type of treatment is the most practical.

Treatments for Small Windows

Small windows shouldn’t be left behind, there a few options to consider when deciding which window treatments to choose:

  • Opt for roller shades which can look great in kitchens and bathrooms. The streamlined, contemporary design is complementary to smaller windows.
  • Roman shades can also be a good option.

Treatments for Large Windows

Large windows can easily provide fresh air and allow natural daylight into your home. If you want to control the amount of sunlight entering the room, consider drapes with a blackout lining or shades that you can adjust.

But since drapes do add more elegance, going with natural colors and choosing an elegant curtain rod would complement the whole style in your room.

Different Treatments for Different Rooms

Every room in your home deserves special attention. The window treatment in each part of the house will differ, so it’s best to think about what is useful, not only about what looks good and matches the interior.

 What’s Best For Your Bathroom?

The window treatment in your bathroom will have to withstand moisture and heat. Roman shades look great but they will absorb the moisture so they’re not a good choice.

 Here’s what we suggest:

Use Honeycomb shades. They will provide the room with adequate light and privacy at the same time. The design is subtle so the shades will easily blend in.

Avoid genuine wood shades. Instead, opt for faux wood shades that will be able to withstand conditions.

Vinyl shutters have a modern feel, and the material is ideal for bathrooms. So, this could be also a good choice

Which window treatment is right for your living room depends on how often you use it and for what purposes.

Control the amount of light with Roman shades. They are available in multiple variations, colors, and designs so you can find something that suits the room.

If you are eco-conscious, for sustainability, you can use cellular shades and filter light to add a layer of insulation. Alternatively, for those who prefer something classic and durable, wood shades or shutters may be the best fit.

To sleep better, add coziness to your bedroom and curb the heating costs, you might need blackout shades.

Investing in custom shades or shutters, adding a black-out panel to your shades or installing roller shades that can block light at any time of the day can be also a good idea. It all depends on the style you want to have in your bedroom.

If you are looking right now to enhance your room’s aesthetic with your window treatment, besides a style, try to think about the importance of the right window treatments and benefits you can have in a long term. The final choice is yours!

Must-Have Eco-Friendly Products for the Home Wed, 12 Feb 2020 17:01:03 +0000 The post Must-Have Eco-Friendly Products for the Home appeared first on NikkiDesigns.

My Top Five Eco-Friendly Products for the Home

We’re all aware of the ecological disaster our planet is in at the moment, but not everyone knows what to do about it. There are lots of ways to save Mother Earth, and it’s all about making an effort to change your micro area first. That’s why lots of people focus on their own homes and try to introduce eco-friendly changes into their interior space. Insisting on eco-friendly products is one of the ways to do so, and here are some of the most popular products you too need to take into consideration.

Reusable produce and storage bags

This isn’t something every single person in the world is using on a daily basis but is still quite popular with lots of people out there. Instead of using plastic food storage containers and boxes, you should stick to cloth bags that are more sustainable and definitely more versatile.

These bags are quite adaptable and pratical, and can be used for everything from fruits and vegetables, to your lunch and snacks.  They come in various shapes and sizes, which means you can find the perfect bag for every purpose.  Of course, the best thing about these bags is that you can reuse them again and again, without damaging the environment!

Metal Straws

Whether you have kids or just love drinking your juice through a straw – your home is probably full of these tiny plastic things that are shockingly bad for the environment. Most people don’t even notice them, though, nor do they understand why using plastic straws is wrong on so many levels. Still, there’s a simple yet effective solution – replacing plastic with stainless steel!

It doesn’t really matter how often you need these straws because you can use them over and over again without compromising their quality. They also look cool and visually appealing, which is something a lot of people value, so this idea is a win-win solution for everyone trying to save our planet!

Bamboo Cutlery

This is another amazing way to minimize the use of plastic products in your home, especially if you’re one of those people who use plastic cutlery all the time. Hosting lots of parties or welcoming guests every day of the week means you’re probably not a fan of washing your spoons, forks, and knives constantly, so opting for plastic solutions is the only thing you can do. However, this is far from sustainable, which is why replacing plastic with bamboo cutlery is the thing to do.

Although most people think that bamboo is too weak or too impractical, this material is actually surprisingly sturdy and durable. What’s also great is that your bamboo cutlery looks nice as well, and it tells everyone around you what an environmentally-friendly and eco-aware person you really are, which is always great.

Hemp Cleaning Cloths

Hemp is super environmentally friendly because it can be grown without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, it is 100% compostable, and requires minimal water to grow.  Cloths made from hemp have the added benefit of being super strong and naturally mold and bacteria-resistant.

Low Flow Toilets and Energy Efficient Washing Machines

In the end, these could easily be the best eco-friendly products out there. We all use tons of water on a daily basis, even though we don’t need it, and trying to save it could mean more to the environment than we realize. Therefore, look into those low-flow toilets that waste less water every time you flush, while still being just as effective. Check out their pros and cons, and you’ll surely realize that installing these toilets is just the thing you need to make your home more eco-friendly.

The same goes for eco-friendly washing machines that require less water, but still make your laundry amazingly clean. These new models are actually getting more and more affordable, making it easier for people to switch to them. Energy-efficient washing machines will also save you quite a lot of money in the long run, so it’s another benefit you have to take into consideration.

Introducing these changes to your home might not be the easiest thing you’ll ever do, but it’s the only way to help our planet. Preserving it for the next generation is something we have to do together, and starting from your own home is one of the best ways to make a massive and lasting change!

Sustainable Ways to Heat Your Home From Around the World Tue, 21 Jan 2020 17:33:19 +0000 Sustainable ways to heat your home

The post Sustainable Ways to Heat Your Home From Around the World appeared first on NikkiDesigns.

Rethinking how we heat our homes will not only cut down energy bills but also aid with reducing carbon emissions.

Vox states that in the U.S. alone, managing the temperature of buildings and homes makes up about 10% of overall greenhouse gas emissions in the country. This is why transitioning to sustainable ways of heating can make a huge contribution to helping with climate change.

So, if you’re wondering ‘How to Make Your Home Cozy for Winter’, and be sustainable, here are some of the trends that we are seeing from across the globe:

1. Going ductless

Insulation, of course is the most affordable and sustainable solution to making your heating system cost-effective. But in the U.S., many people go further by installing ductless heat pumps. Duct losses can comprise up to 30% of the energy consumption for space conditioning, according to the US Department of Energy.

With ductless temperature management, you can zone control your rooms. This helps since you probably don’t want to heat your garage as much as your living room or bedroom. This also means a shift from gas to electricity for your heat source.

2. Use the right heater

Australian leading energy company Aurora Energy notes how homeowners are opting for small heating units. It’s no use using good insulation or even installing ductless pumps if you’re wasting money on buying a large heater for a small room. While heating from one source alone is a waste of money and energy, using numerous big ones will yield the same if not worse output. Opt for smaller pumps designed to be energy efficient. This way, you’re saving money now and in the long run.

Electric radiators are also an option.  These ones are energy-efficient, stylish and easy to insall.

3. Upgrade your boiler

The Guardian reports on how sustainability is a growing trend with many British citizens ditching their centralized heating boilers and shifting to more sustainable low carbon heating systems. It’s estimated that this transition will be complete in all new homes by 2025, which will help reduce the 14% greenhouse gas emissions that come from UK homes. Even though that is the target date, many are already making the switch with plumbing experts HomeServe recommending that their UK customers upgrade their boiler if they’ve had it for an extended period of time. A boiler that is over 15 years old will be much less effective than a modern design, such as a combi-boiler, which is designed to be heat efficient. Plus, if it’s new, you’re less likely to have issues going into the winter season.

4. Automated thermostat

If you only turn up the heat as soon as you wake up or leave the boiler or heating pump on low all day, you’re wasting energy. In Canada, homeowners are investing in automated thermostats that control their home heating systems. While it’s counterintuitive to add another layer of cost to your appliances, it’s a much-needed investment for efficiency. The Toronto Sun highlights that installing programmable thermostats can equal a 10% drop in your heating costs.

There are numerous ways to increase the energy efficiency and sustainability of your heating system. All around the world, homeowners are waking up to the possibility of new technologies that can warm our houses without warming the planet. The key is to take action.

My Top 10 Favorite Paint Colours Fri, 17 Jan 2020 01:03:11 +0000 favorite paint colours

The post My Top 10 Favorite Paint Colours appeared first on NikkiDesigns.

Today I am going to share with you some of my favorite Benjamin Moore paint colours that I have used.  These are colours that have been used for years by many designers, because they are so great!

#1 – cloud white, OC 130

This has been one of my favorite whites for many years.  It is a soft, creamy white that goes well with white subway tiles and can be used in any room.  It is also great for trim.  Most of my house is painted this colour and I never grow tired of it.  The only rooms I don’t have painted cloud white are my bathrooms – I like a little colour in those rooms.  If cloud white is not white enough for you, simply white OC 117 is also great.

#2 – wickam grey, HC 171

wickam gray paint colour

This is a soft grey, that looks great in almost any room.  I have used it in bedrooms, living rooms, and recreation rooms.

#3 – eternity, AF 695

Slightly darker than wickam grey, with a little more blue in it, this colour goes well with carrera marble.  I have it in my master bathroom and just love it.  This is a low VOC paint.

#4 – platinum grey, PM 7

Darker than wickam gray, this gray looks great on kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

#5 – revere pewter, HC 172

Another soft, neutral colour that is a sophisticated classic.  It is a soft beige with just enough colour in it that it doesn’t look washed out.  It tends to look quite different in different lights, so make sure you paint a sample first.

Dark Paint Colours

A few dark paint colours stand out for me, for using on accent walls, or kitchen and bathroom cabinets –

#6 – hale navy, HC 154

I have this dark, rich blue on my island and just love it.  Another benjamin moore colour that has been around for a long time and continues to be used alot.

#7 – kendall charcoal, HC 166

This is a very dark gray with a bit of brown in it.  I recently used it on an accent wall in a client’s “man cave” and it looked spectacular.

#8 – fatigue green, 2140-10

A beautiful, very dark army green that adds drama to any room.

#9 – mediterranean teal, 2123-10

Another very rich, dramatic colour, this is a dark blue-green.

#10 – wrought iron, 2124-10

This is a very dark grey that is almost black – great for cabinets, doors and accent walls.

Have you used any of these colours in your home?

How to Remove Stains from Linen Tablecloths, Napkins and Clothing Wed, 27 Nov 2019 05:19:48 +0000 The post How to Remove Stains from Linen Tablecloths, Napkins and Clothing appeared first on NikkiDesigns.

Linen fabrics are made from a natural fiber manufactured from the stem of the flax plant. Linen is strong and durable, moth, bacteria and perspiration-resistant. Unlike cotton, linen is weaker when wet and prone to abrasion and should be washed with care.

Linen tablecloths, napkins and clothing are so beautiful, but what do you do when they are stained?

Here are some tips to keep your linens looking fresh and clean.

  1. Ideally you will want to treat the stain as soon as possible.  The longer the stains sit on the fabric, the harder the stain will be to remove.
  2. Scrape off any excess food or liquid.
  3. Refer to this stain removal chart to pre-treat your stain for specific food stains.
  4. Refer to this guide to help you choose which type of stain remover product to use for different types of stains.
  5. Once you have pre-treated the stain, and have let it sit for at least 15 minutes, the item can be washed.
  6. Our linens can be machine-washed in warm water and regular detergent on gentle cycle.  Once done, check to make sure any stains are removed.  If the stains are still showing, wash again.  You can add white vinegar or oxyclean or mild dish detergent to the load for extra cleaning power.
  7. Air dry or machine dry on low heat for about 10 minutes, then remove promptly.  You can iron linen while it is still slightly damp.

How to Make Your Home Cozy for Winter Tue, 22 Oct 2019 23:46:33 +0000 The post How to Make Your Home Cozy for Winter appeared first on NikkiDesigns.

As soon as the temperature starts dropping and the days start to get shorter here on the west coast of BC, I feel the need to make sure my home is cozy for the months ahead when I will be spending more time indoors.

Making your home feel cozy does not mean you have to clutter it up with a million pillows and blankets.  Making your home feel cozy while still keeping it stylish and uncluttered, is possible.  It just means you need to be more selective in what you add to your spaces, making sure each item is purposeful and still fits in with your design scheme.

Here are my top 5 ways to make your home feel cozy for the winter:

1.  Switch your throws from summer ones to winter ones.  Merino wool and alpaca are my favorite throws for winter.  Have one near every chair or sofa in your living room or family room – wherever you like to read or watch TV.

2. Switch your pillows in your living room or family room to ones that have a soft texture like velvet, wool or hemp.  Dark, warm colours like red, purple, burnt orange, and golden yellow will also add a cozy feel.

3. Try adding rugs to floors if you leave them bare in the summer.  Thick, soft rugs and runners will keep your feet warmer and add another cozy layer.

4. Add layers to your tables too!  Try putting a linen or heavy cotton tablecloth or throw on your dining table – it will instantly make your dining area feel more inviting because your table is no longer a cold, hard surface.  Use natural, earthy colours that won’t compete with other elements in the room.

draperies, tall window, bedroom

5. Do you have bare windows or just blinds on your windows?  While they may be fine in the summer, on cold winter nights, bare windows and hard blinds are cold and uninviting.  Adding draperies (if there is room around the window) will make your home instantly feel cozier, especially at night.  If you don’t have room for drapes, soft roman shades will also work to add warmth and style to your home.

What are your favorite ways to make your home feel cozy in winter?
