Fall is one of my favourite times of year to decorate.  There is something so inviting about bringing a little more warmth and texture into our homes as the days get shorter and the evenings get cooler.

But if you love a modern coastal home, you may not want your space to suddenly feel dark, overly rustic or filled with traditional orange and brown Fall decor.

The good news?  You don’t have to completely change your decor for the season.

Wondering how to add Fall decor to a modern coastal home?

With a few simple additions – natural textures, muted Fall colours, vintage pieces and seasonal greenery – you can create a cozy, coastal home for Fall while keeping the relaxed, light and timeless feel you love.

Here are some of my favourite ways to do it.

1. Choose a muted Fall Colour Palette

You don’t need bright orange pumpkins and lots of red to make your home feel like Fall.

Instead, look for soft, earthy colours that complement a coastal palette:

  • warm cream
  • oatmeal
  • camel
  • soft rust
  • terracotta
  • muted olive green
  • warm taupe
  • deep navy
  • natural wood tones

These colours work beautifually with the whites, creams, soft blues and natural textures found in modern coastal interiors.  A few carefully chosen pieces in warm autumn colours can make a room feel seasonal without overwhelming your existing decor.

Designer tip:  If your home already has a neutral palette, introduce just one or two Fall colours rather than adding several all at once.

2.  Add Warmth with Natural Textures

Texture is one of the easiest ways to transition a coastal home into Fall.

Think about adding:

  • linen
  • wool
  • cotton
  • woven baskets
  • rattan
  • wood
  • chunky knits
  • handmade ceramics
  • dried grasses

A simple, soft throw casually draped over an chair or sofa can make a room feel instantly cozier.

Natural materials are especially effective because they complement the organic feeling of modern coastal style while adding the warmth we naturally crave in autumn.

3. Bring in Fall Foliage

One of my favourite ways to decorate for Fall is with natural branches and seasonal foliage.

You don’t need an elaborate floral arrangement.  A few branches in a vintage pottery jug or simple vase can create a beautiful focal point.

Try:

  • autumn branches
  • eucalyptus
  • dried grasses
  • hydrangeas
  • olive branches
  • rosemary
  • dried flowers

For a more coastal-inspired look, keep arrangements loose and natural rather than overly symmetrical.

There is something so beautiful about bringing a little bit of the outdoors inside.

4. Use Vintage Pieces to Add Character

Fall is the perfect time to mix vintage and antique pieces into your modern coastal home.

A vintage brass candlestick, old pottery jug, wooden bowl or antique silver piece can add warmth and personality without making the room feel overly decorated.

I especially love combining old and new.    The contrast creates a home that feels collected rather than decorated all at once.

And, of course, choosing secondhand and vintage pieces is also a more sustainable way to decorate.

5. Add a Cozy Layer

One of the easiest Fall updates is adding a throw and changing your pillows in your living room.  Look for fabrics like linen, cotton and wool with soft textures.  The key is to keep the pattern relaxed and understated.

You want your Fall decor to complement your home – not take over the room.

Keep Your Coastal Style

The most important thing to remember is that your home doesn’t need to look completely different for Fall.

Your modern coastal style can still be:  light, natural, relaxed, simple, timeless.

Instead of replacing your existing decor, think about layering.

Add warmth rather than clutter

Add texture rather than lots of colour.

Add natural elements rather than seasonal decorations everywhere.

And choose pieces that you genuinely love and can use year after year.
