Hmmm, I use these words all the time to describe my business, but you may be thinking, “what the heck are organic soft furnishings?”

Let me break it down for you.

First, you are probably familiar with the term “organic food”.  This is food grown without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, using animal-friendly and environmentally friendly practices.*

Well, organic fabrics are similar. They are fabrics made from natural fibers, that have also been grown on a farm that follows standards that nurture the soil or animal from which it comes and do not use toxic insecticides, herbicides, or fungicides.

The Organic Trade Association web site offers a complete definition of the standards for organic fiber processing.

You can read more about all the different types of organic fabrics there are here.

I have also written about why it is important to use organic fabrics, and how non-organic fabrics harm our environment here.

Second, what are “soft furnishings”?  These are anything in your home (or in a commercial building), that are made from fabric.  Cloth items that are used to decorate and furnish your home.  So these can be slipcovers, cushions, pillows, curtains, tea towels, napkins, bedding – you get the picture.

Therefore, organic soft furnishings are simply cloth items for your home, that are made from organic fabrics.  Easy, right?
