Have you ever tried making dog treats at home? There are some great natural treats out there but they can be a bit more costly and harder to find so I often make my own at home. This is a very simple fool-proof recipe I sometimes use. I hope you and your doggy enjoy it!
Simple Peanut Butter Oat Dog Treats
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups whole wheat pastry flour (or other flour)
1 cup oats (rolled not instant)
1/2 cup organic smooth peanut butter
1 cup water
1 tbsp flaxmeal (ground flaxseed)
1/2 cup additional flour (I used the unbleached all purpose for this)
Preheat oven to 350F.
Combine water, flaxmeal and peanut butter and microwave for a minute. I did this in two 30 second incriments. Stir the mixture until the peanut butter is mostly combined but some chunks are still fine.
Add the 1 1/2 cups flour and stir to combine.
Add the 1 cup of oats and stir to combine.
Once this is all mixed, start adding additional flour, up to 1/2 cup and kneading the mixture until you have a dough. It can be a bit sticky but shouldn’t actually stick to your hands.
Once the flour is mixed, roll the dough out on a floured surface to desired thickness.
Using a knife or pizza roller, cut the dough into squares. If you have a little dog, make the squares smaller. My dog is around 65lbs so I made my squares a bit bigger.
Arrange squares on a non stick pan. They will shrink as they cook so you can place them close together.
Bake for 20min.
Let cool and you’re done!
it makes much much more than what you see here!
I keep about a weeks worth in a airtight container for my dog and put the rest in the freezer because they don’t last as long as store bought treats. When you need more, just take them out of the freezer and let thaw! Or if your doggy likes them frozen, serve them that way.
My dog loves them!
