Detox baths are meant to help rid toxins from your body, through your skin, using heat, steam and other ingredients. They have also been said to be healing, good for the skin, helpful in aiding your immune system and more. While there isn’t a lot of scientific research to back up whether or not these really “work”, they have been around for centuries and still remain popular. I say, give it a try and decide for yourself if it’s something you want to incorporate into your life! I personally enjoy them.
There are many “recipes” you can follow for a detox bath. Various essential oils can always be added and make quite the difference. Here is one recipe I like to use.
Detox Bath
1/3 cup Epsom salts
1/3 cup sea salt
1/3 cup baking soda (optional)
2 tbsp ground ginger
1 cup apple cider vinegar
Combine the dry ingredients and mix. Add this to a bath of hot (not unbearably hot!) water followed by the apple cider vinegar. Soak for 20-40min. I usually stay in for around 30min. Before the detox bath, I like to dry brush. It’s normal to feel a bit dizzy or to have a headache but if you really feel unwell, don’t stay in the bath.
Please note that it is best to use organic ingredients. I have aluminum free baking soda and organic apple cider vinegar but that is not what is pictured. You can use just epsom salts and ginger; very inexpensive!
The dry mix. Feel free to make more than one batch to store.
The apple cider vinegar and ginger turn the bath yellow but don’t worry, it doesn’t stain. I actually quite like the smell but you may not.
Tips:
- Drink lots of water during and after your detox bath! It is dehydrating.
- Keep a towel nearby as you will also sweat a lot (as if you were in a sauna!)
- Take it easy after the detox bath until you have your energy back. It is normal to feel quite tired.
- Don’t rinse off right away. Your skin might feel a bit tacky at first but if you’re going to rinse off, wait at least an hour.
Please talk to a doctor before taking a detox bath if you are pregnant.
