Love the look of piped pillows? They definitely have a custom look and by adding a zipper to your cover, it can be removed for washing. So practical and so beautiful!
If you feel like taking on the challenge of making a pillow cover like this yourself, here are some step-by-step instructions. I have been a professional seamstress for over 25 years, and I’ve decided to share a few of my tips with you.
This pillow is made out of one of the fabrics in my Bliss line. It is 100% organic cotton, and it is called Trident, Navy. The piping is also 100% organic cotton, in white.
Step 1
Cut out two pieces of fabric for the front and back of the pillow. If your pillow is 18″ x 18″, cut your pieces 19″ x 19″. Taper the corners slightly so that when made, your pillow corners will be softer looking.
Step 2
Make the piping. Cut a strip of fabric on the bias, 1 3/4″ wide x the distance around your pillow + 3″.
If one piece is not long enough, sew ends together and press seam allowances open. The seam will be less noticeable if it is sewn on a 45 degree angle. Wrap the strip around piping filler and, using your zipper foot, baste the piping.
Step 3
Baste the piping to the right side of one of your pillow pieces. To join the ends of the piping, trim the filler so that the ends will but up to each other. Fold one end of the piping cover under as shown, an continue sewing.
Step 4
Attaching the zipper.
Serge the bottom side of both pillow pieces. Press the serged edge of the side without the piping to the wrong side, 5/8″. Place the two pillow pieces right sides together. Center zipper and pin the pillow pieces just inside the ends of the zipper.
Open zipper. Place one side face down, with teeth close to piping. Using a zipper foot, stitch close to zipper teeth.
Pin the other side of the zipper to the other side of the pillow. Stitch down center of zipper tape, with the zipper teeth lined up with the edge of the fold.
Step 5
Last step! Pin pillow sides together and stitch close to the piping stitching, all the way around the pillow. Serge the three sides. Turn pillow right sides out.
