5 Ways to De-clutter Your Home
- Bedroom Closet: Generally, this an area that tends to become the most cluttered. How many of us can say we wear/use everything in our closet? Not many. A good rule to follow is that if you haven’t worn something in a year, get rid of it. Try having your own fashion show, trying on items that don’t get much wear and really seeing if they still fit or will be worn more in the future. If you’re hesitating, toss it! There are lots of places you can donate clothes to or if you want to make some money give Ebay, a garage sale or a secondhand store a try. Wall hooks are great for hanging scarves, purses and necklaces. Find out how to make your own here.
-
Bathroom Vanity: Easy to ignore since the items in your vanity are usually out of site, things can pile up quickly. If something has hardened, changed color or passed its expiry date, throw it in the trash. Keep items here that you use regularly and store others in a container below the sink or in a drawer. Keep things like tweezers in one place so you can keep track of how many you have. Also, don’t forget to wash the inside of your vanity! You can find lots of bathroom storage ideas here
- Junk Mail: It’s simple enough to sift through junk mail and recycle what you don’t want but did you know that the average person wastes 2 1/2 hours a year doing this? To save time and counter space, try signing up for the Mail Preference Service on the Direct Marketing Association Website. $1 will get your name and address removed from potential mailing lists, ending 75% of junk mail within around 90 days.
- Time-savvy: A great way to get yourself motivated to de-clutter is to set a timer for anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. Organize as much as you can within that time frame. If that doesn’t work for you, try tackling one room at a time. You could dedicate certain days of the week to a particular room. For example, Tuesday is organize the bathroom day! This makes it easier to keep up with it and to not feel as though you’re never quite on top of the clutter.
- Think: Before you shop, think about your purchases. Do you really need it? Do you have space for it? Try following the rule where for each new purchase you make, something you already own has to go. Of course, this only applies to things that take up space and potentially create clutter. It helps with preventing unnecessary purchases or having a few too many vases! You can prevent clutter before it happens.
